Do we need nuclear energy to stop climate change? More and more voices from science, environmental activists and the press have been saying so in recent years - but this comes as a shock to those who are fighting against nuclear energy and the problems that come with it. So who is right? Well - it is complicated.

  • Nuclear has two advantages. One it could cut back on fossil fuel production by providing an alternate energy. Two if it catastrophically fails it can cut back on fossil fuel use by killing everyone nearby. Win-win. 🤦‍♂️ See here is my problem with nuclear energy. It COULD be amazing if we didn’t make mistakes. But the problem is that we are human, and I just can’t see a world in which I can trust that corners won’t be cut in the name of profit. Or any other number of human errors.

    Soren KazarenSoren KazarenPrije 7 sati
  • Nuclear is the way we could get there fastest and most efficiently at PRESENT understanding. Renewables may improve over the decades but if we want to make radical change fast we need to employ nuclear more. I definitely think the future of nuclear science is to tap into the spent energy until we've found a way to completely utilize every last "drop" of energy left in traditionally considered "spent" fuel.

    iKazediKazedPrije 8 sati
  • Given the urgency of climate change, we need to do everything in our power to make fossil fuels a thing of the past. Since renewable cannot, so far, provide all of the electricity that we need. Nuclear needs to be part of our electric-generation mix.

  • Sorry for my comment being political. Please be civil. This is a video both democrats and republicans can agree on. Unfortunatelly, I feel like democrats radically oppose fossil fuels and want a switch to renewables right now. Us republicans we don't oppose renewables we just know the change needs to happen gratually and safely to always have energy surplus. Plus meanwhile the renewables are going to get cheaper with time. So it's better to do it later than sooner. So why don't we use fossil fuels till they run out anyway ? Don't worry the world is not gonna end soon, atleast not due to climate change. And then genuine question. How are you gonna make the developing world use renewables when they could care less about emissions ? They just wanna develop...

    ŽmidoŽmidoPrije 21 sat
    • First off, "us republicans" is blatantly false no matter what you're talking about. Not all republicans nor all liberals ever agree on the same things. Second, your ideas are actually pretty liberal, usually with conservatives they don't want to change at all, and due to the money big oil companies make they want to keep fossil fuels going as long as possible. Next, the change does need to happen quickly because if we don't get things going soon, the world could be damaged more. Believe it or not, climate change has already made an impact on the world. Ever taken a look at how the polar ice caps can shrunk significantly? Even if climate change wasn't a thing, it'd be extremely hard to time us running out of fossil fuels to switching to renewables, might as well have renewables ready beforehand. There really is no reason to wait once we have the technology and the means to get things set up.

      TheAdvertisementTheAdvertisementPrije 24 minuta
    • @Žmido The end will not happen soon, but we must end the use of fossil fuels at fast as possible. If we burn them at the rate of today we will have in less than 200 years a warming of 8 degres celsius, with that we will have a sea rise of 6 meters and the regions around the equator would be uninhabitable to animals or plants. Also because of the co2 we will have a cognitive impairment of around 20% and being to long in a room where co2 concentraions are 4-5 times higher could potentially kill someone.

      OtoponOtoponPrije 5 sati

Thus the green party took advantage of the disaster of Fukushima, led Germany go into a „nuclear energy, no thanks“ point of view and finally all the fossil energy sources are still running, while the low emssion nuclear power plants are being shut down. People do in fact need more education for this topic and I hope videos like this will find their way to more people

In any case of explosion or meltdown, we get fewer picture of disaster than Chernobyl.

  • What has poisoned the well for nuclear energy is that those who make the profit from selling 'cheap' nuclear electricity while their plants are operating are nowhere to be seen when it comes to cleaning up their toxic long term legacy- that cost is carried by the general taxpayer. Same for fossil fuels, to be fair. What is sorely missing in this contribution is that the large and increasing consumption of energy is not an immutable given. Kurzgesagt bemoans that technologies to reprocess nuclear waste are known, but not fully implemented - but fails to mention that loft insulation, double glazing, heat pumps and white LED lighting also are known, but not fully implemented. The 'opinion part' begins well before he says so.

Wind and solar have many not recyclable parts, And the materials needed for it requires A lot of new mines to be opened in Africa and South America, destroying the habitat we need to protect. • Modern Nuclear is renewable energy. A 300 life half decay is nothing, we could store that waste in a warehouse waiting for it to stop being radioactive compared to the amount of co2 fossils pump in the air. This is what China understand but the west won't compete because the masses were brainwashed to believe fossil fuels good, nuclear bad and a 10year development cycle means the politician who implements it does not reap the rewards as he will likely be out of office when it comes online.

  • My personal reasoning for Nuclear over Fossil fuel is actually pretty simple: Nuclear power might be more dangerous, but fewer humans are required to keep it steady - and they're all trained professionals. In contrast, fossil fuels generally require manual labour and *a lot* of frameworks to keep it going. The less humans are involved, and the more controlled it can be - the less accidents happen. The only reason fossil fuel is still here, is "for the jobs". We need to stop being selfish and accept change before the world changes without us.
